Welcome,

The Chess Challenge is designed for the benefit of the entire community. When one takes the chess challenge, they are embarking on a journey into a new way of thinking. As we study the principles that chess can offer, we slowly adopt the preplanning and strategies used to direct our decisions as opposed to purely unplanned thinking.

  • We are a group of good citizens sharing the belief that offering a safe chess learning environment will produce positive results.

  • We aim to measure the success of the individual student and offer sound reasoning and problem solving skills as a supplement to current logic pattens and skills.

With your help and support, we can offer The Chess Challenge to our community and measure the impacts and make improvements.

CHESS PIECES

  • A pawn can move two spaces from its starting position, but only one space after that. A pawn can only capture a piece when it moves diagonally and can never move backwards.
  • A knight is the only piece that can jump over another piece. It moves in an “L” shape. It can move 2 spaces horizontally and then one space vertically, or it can move 2 spaces vertically and then one space horizontally.
  • The bishop can move diagonally and any number of squares.
  • Rooks can move any number of squares forwards, backwards, or horizontally. The rook cannot move diagonally.
  • The queen can move in any direction and any number of squares. It is one of the most powerful pieces.
  • The king can move one space in any direction, but two kings can never be side by side.

About The Chess Challenge

TCC was created by Pensacola local resident Rafael Lopez,

Rafael, an avid chess player, saw how he could use the game of chess to give back to his community.  Using Chess to help those less fortunate change their way of critical thinking, helping people think about their next step in life, plus many steps forward, all while considering the consquences of each setp.

The Chess Challenge team journeys out to where the less fortunate are,  sets up chess games,  encouraging folks to play chess, and creates a fun atmosphere for all involved.
